POSTCARD FROM CAIRO - Notes on the 2023 publishing fellowship

This year’s edition of the publishing fellowship, ‘Cairo Calling 6.0’ has now concluded and with great success. The programme was full of warmth and an endearing atmosphere of Egyptian hospitality.

Geared towards presenting the abundance of publishing resources available from Egypt and the Arab world, it was also an opportunity for professionals in the industry from outside the region to take up translation and the publishing of books in Arabic into other languages. It is envisaged that the exchange of publishing rights would facilitate spreading the reach of the avalanche of resources produced in the region.

Immensely grateful to the organisers at the General Egyptian Book Organisation (GEBO) for inviting me to the 2023 Publishing Fellowship.

It was a great opportunity and learning moment which provided an amazing insight into the vast world of Arab literature and publishing. It was also a delight to meet and interact with other publishers from around the world. These professionals are as diverse as they are representatives of the different cadres of publishing.

The panel discussions threw up a lot of revelations and a great deal of information on moving the industry forward. The sessions on the Future of the Publishing Industry in the Post-Pandemic World, Opportunities of Translation into Arabic, and the Prospects and Challenges of Publishing in Asia are especially robust and offer rare and insightful perspectives.

Communication between a group of publishing professionals from across the globe and those from the Arab publishing industry would no doubt have proved challenging. However, this was made easy with the active participation of the university students volunteering as translators. They were able to offer invaluable support through the facilitation of meetings. The volunteers are incredibly helpful in doing this. The entertainment and hospitality of course are superb and truly exceeded expectations.

This programme and indeed the whole of the Cairo International Book Fair show purposefulness with an intent to build a functional and sustainable legacy while introducing Arab publishing to a wider world through collaboration and cooperation.

Again, the continued success of the programme projects it as a beacon of hope that should inspire other nations to support the publishing industry.

From Malta with love… of books!

The Malta Book Festival is the foremost book celebration in the country’s cultural calendar. Annually, the MBF boasts an attendance rate of 40,000 visitors, the participation of more than 40 exhibitors, and offers extensive networking opportunities for industry professionals.

The book Festival begins with the opening ceremony on the evening of Tuesday 22. The event which is running for the second year at the famous Malta Fairs and Convention Centre (MFCC), Ta’ Qali, is opening its doors to the public over five days from Wednesday November 23, till Sunday November 27.

The festival’s events are being organised by the National Book Council in collaboration with participating publishers, authors, booksellers, student associations, NGOs and government agencies.

At the core of the 2022 festival will be a record number of 50 exhibitors, who are all linked to the book industry and many of whom are organising numerous events populating the festival programme. Infomediaworks are participating as an exhibitor (Stand Number 13).

At the Book Festival (Nov 23 – 27, 2022)

Malta Book Festival (MBF) rolls off on a high on Wednesday morning. But not the high roller kickstart that you’d expect with a trading frenzy. Rather, it’s the fact that the mornings of Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays should witness attendance by school children of all ages. And how they besiege the fair grounds on Wednesday albeit in an orderly fashion and accompanied by teachers and appropriate adults.

Two highlights here. No doubt we continue to witness the unfortunate decline in reading for pleasure. And it would seem that worried observers are keen and are in unison on the need to arrest the insidious decline.

More so, if the intent to sustain and improve upon reading for pleasure should be a genuine pursuit, it needs be vigorously pursued and must involve the younger generations.

On another note, and an interesting one at that: the ‘domineering presence’ of these children in Malta during the morning sessions is hugely symbolic - they hold the purchasing power. Each of the registered pupils is armed with a €5 voucher to purchase a reading material of their choice!

So, the children’s got the (spending) power. What a way to involve them and encourage a generation whose attention is fiercely competed for by the ever-widening influence of smart tech, games and multimedia entertainment.

Great feelings coming from the fulfilment of being a part of this successful trade event that re-emphasises the place of all stakeholders in the book trade as cultural gatekeepers of reading and the acquisition of knowledge.

Salute to Dayo Olomu, the guru of self-reinvention

Dr Dayo Olomu propels his career to the upper echelon with the publication of his groundbreaking book on premium leadership. It is a much needed guidance for leaders and managers in a world that continues to see unimaginable scale of volatility and uncertainties in personal lives, social spheres and in enterprise. Let’s take a moment to appreciate an esteemed colleague, and a great professional to engage with, Dr Dayo Olomu.

Dayo Olomu is no doubt endowed with the gift of self-rediscovery and aptly re-inventing himself as he go es along. His familiar story of humble beginnings (for an instance, selling iced water at a bus garage in Lagos when he was 10 years old), peppered with series of hurdles, in astonishing mixes of perplexing and daunting dosages, are all too familiar to those who follow his odyssey. He never fails to highlight them.

To those closer in professional and social interactions with the suave man of manners, the ‘storytelling’ bouts are not about flaunting his ability to surmount oddities. Far from it. They are often recounted in the spirit of admonition: that those who find themselves in comparable situations, may take heed and hit the perseverance button, pick the gauntlet of fighting, not just to survive but to excel, coming out on top of the particular adversity.

From his stint as a PR cum A&R Manager to his journalism days, our paths have always and often inevitably crossed. One amazing thing about DDO, as he’s fondly referred these days, is the temerity and sincerity of purpose that he brings to any task, assigned solely or shared, and the conviviality that he creates in the process just so that others feeling less able would be carried along without an iota of despondency.

It is with sheer delight that the team at Infomediaworks Limited therefore accepted to help midwife his book on leadership when he intimated his intention to us a few years back.

As the lead, my initial concern for Dayo was that he shouldn’t embark on an ‘unmerited lane-crossing’, as some folks are too often eager to do. A flight of fancy whereby someone is steadily making progress on a charted course and then, without careful planning or a functional roadmap, deciding to veer off and embark upon what often turns out to be a whimsical journey. I wanted to appeal to his sense of resourcefulness by staying in the ‘lane’ that he’s familiar with. Being a life coach and motivational speaker, providing mentorship and motivating people to achieve their best. Why not write a book about that?

But DDO has remodelled his leadership vision in no quaint manner. He is after a continuum of people-building on a scale and magnitude ensconced in semi-academia. Propound and teach leadership to a broad range of people across diverse strata of commerce, politics, administration and all that. He’s also looking to pit his thoughts on leadership against a world known for throwing up unexpected and baffling scenarios. These are the times for which we need real leaders with actionable objectives and the temerity to see these through with exceptional and all-encompassing beneficial results.

Going through the initial sketches with Dayo, I envisioned the usual brisk but convincing gusto for which he’s renowned at getting things done. I once again see a man ready to fill the vacuum that he brilliantly expounded to exist in that genre. We gladly accepted to work with him and the rest, as they say, is now history.

Book Review: FAITH OF A CHILD: The Autobiography of Patti Boulaye

Singer, actress, artist and charity founder, Patti Boulaye OBE (born Patricia Ngozi Ebigwei) is a known name and familiar face to millions around the world. One of the eight children in her family, she had moved to the United Kingdom aged 16, with the aim of becoming a nun. Famous for her singing and stage career, she is also into modelling (the face of Lux beauty soap for 29 years) and acting (playing the title role of Bisi in the 1977 Jab Adu-directed flick, ‘Bisi Daughter of the River’ – critically acclaimed as the biggest grossing African movie ever).

She had also won the ITV talent show ‘New Faces’ in 1978 and after that embarked on a successful recording and television career, including running her series, 'The Patti Boulaye Show'. However, most of what we know about her background and upbringing stem from sketches, mostly uncorroborated snippets from the tabloid media.

“The Faith of a Child”, her autobiography, was published early in spring 2017. The 352-page book gives a vivid account of her childhood, growing up into the teenage years and later on, an insight into her career as a professional artist and her marital life.

An admix of decent familial accounts oozing love, devotion, togetherness and camaraderie, her narrative is also spiced with bleak and challenging stories, especially recounts of her parents' bitter divorce and the gruesome accounts of the Nigeria civil war (1967 – 1970) during which she almost lost her life.

There is a point at which Patti’s autobiography becomes every person’s narrative. The war accounts and political upheavals in Nigeria (stretching to the Kwame Nkrumah years in neighbouring Ghana) are told in great details. There is also grieving in the family with the loss of her siblings: two elder brothers – Johnny and Tony, the latter in a plane crash, and her sister, Rosaleen. Then are included her experiences in the UK entertainment industry of (especially) the 1970s. All of these are touching and would resonate with many of her readers. But daunting as these challenges are, we are presented with a glimpse into the journey of a woman with an incredible strength of character who stoically worked her way up and with an astounding elegance.

Written with such a compelling force and attention to details, readers would no doubt be bowled over by her delicate attachment to the twin factors of childhood innocence and unwavering faith. Against the many unnerving twists and turns that seem to dot her life's story, Patti's firm belief, attributed in large doses to the devout Catholic upbringing, sees her in triumph. It is also a reflection of her loving but strict mother, who played more than a significant role in the training of all the children. Sharing and caring could as well have been the household's mantra, a testament to the attitude that Patti has brought to bear on all aspects of her personal life and career.

Wherever the reader’s childhood might have taken place, and irrespective of what might have constituted the rites of passage to adulthood, every conscious mind will identify with one strand of emotional experience or the other in "Faith of a Child", the autobiography of Patti Boulaye.

As her life’s story continues, perhaps a follow-up volume should be published by this amazing woman who has captivated her teeming admirers for decades with the totality of her artistry – whether in singing, modelling or her stage career. And in recent times, Patti Boulaye has added a few other laurels, most notable being her involvement with charitable causes.

Her charity, Support for Africa (SFA) which launched in 2001 at the Royal Albert Hall with 3000 gospel singers and a horde of celebrities, has built five health care clinics and a school in Africa. The year 2017 also marks Boulaye’s foray into the academia having been awarded the Visiting Teaching Fellowship of the Middlesex University Business School Faculty of Professional and Social Sciences.

And she is still performing: 2018 is dotted with a litany of tour dates and booking availability for show appearances. She sure will delight and inspire multitudes even with a continuity of her extraordinary odyssey and exemplary accomplishments.

In “The Faith of a Child’, Patti Boulaye weaves the story of an incredible journey of remarkable faith in God and belief in self. Millions of people around the world who admire her huge talents and the elegance that she has brought into her arts will love her the more, even as they find her life’s story relatable and inspiring.
